Bio
Eugene de Boer (b.1995) is a painter living and working in Auckland, New Zealand. Inspired by neo-expressionism and the experiential nature of creating, de Boer reveals great amount’s of evolution in his work including style, medium, composition and subject matter. de Boer seeks to capture the essence of ideas and emotions through shapes, colours and textures oscillating between abstract and figurative work. He is currently Interested in the ideas of abjection, class and the divide between high and low culture and what can be considered beautiful in art. He does not shy away from “bad” painting allowing for awkwardness / ugliness to enter the work, unsettling gestures, crude figures, smears, fluorescent hues and fleshy tones enter the abstracts and commercial mass media imagery becomes present in the figurative. de Boer continues to probe the infinite combinations of forms and how these combinations can be manipulated in order to question the role of art in modern society, how every new iteration of style or subject is influenced by what came before it and what is the present and future of painting itself.
